Puppy vaccination schedule
Puppies receive their first vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age. The core vaccines (DHPP and Rabies) are given in a series of 2-3 doses, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, completing around 16 weeks. Until the full series is complete, puppies should avoid public areas where unvaccinated dogs may have been, as parvovirus can survive in the environment for months.
Kitten vaccination schedule
Kittens start their FVRCP series at 6-8 weeks with boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. Rabies vaccine is given at 12-16 weeks. FeLV (feline leukemia) is recommended for kittens who will go outdoors or live with FeLV-positive cats.
Core vs optional vaccines
Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs and cats regardless of lifestyle. These protect against diseases that are widespread, severe, or transmissible to humans (like rabies). Optional vaccines are recommended based on your pet's lifestyle, geographic location, and risk factors. Your veterinarian can help determine which optional vaccines your pet needs.
Adult booster schedule
After the puppy or kitten series, most core vaccines require an annual booster in the first year, then every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine type, local laws, and your veterinarian's protocol. Rabies boosters are legally mandated in most jurisdictions. Never skip boosters, as immunity wanes over time.
