Mating date
How long are dogs pregnant?
Dog pregnancy (gestation) lasts approximately 63 days from the date of mating, though healthy deliveries can occur anywhere from day 58 to day 68. The variation depends on the exact timing of ovulation relative to mating, as sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days.
The most accurate way to determine a due date is through progesterone testing by a veterinarian at the time of breeding. Without that, counting 63 days from the first mating date gives a reliable estimate.
How long are cats pregnant?
Cat pregnancy lasts 63 to 67 days, with an average of 65 days. Cats can become pregnant as young as 4 months old, and they are induced ovulators, meaning ovulation is triggered by mating itself. A cat can mate with multiple males during a single heat cycle, resulting in kittens with different fathers in the same litter.
Early signs of pregnancy in dogs and cats
Week 2-3: Slight nipple enlargement and pinking. Some pets show mild morning sickness with decreased appetite or occasional vomiting.
Week 4: A veterinarian can confirm pregnancy via ultrasound. The belly may begin to show slight rounding.
Week 5-6: Noticeable weight gain and increased appetite. You may feel movement when placing your hand gently on the belly.
Week 7-9: Nesting behavior, milk production, and visible puppies or kittens moving under the skin.
Preparing for delivery
Set up a whelping or nesting box 7-10 days before the due date. Use a quiet, warm, enclosed space lined with clean towels. Keep the room temperature between 29-32°C (85-90°F) for the first week after birth, as newborns cannot regulate body temperature. Have your veterinarian's emergency number ready and know the closest 24-hour animal hospital.
