Maine Coon Health Guide

Maine Coon is the most popular pedigreed cat breed in America and one of the oldest native US breeds. Lifespan: 12-15 years. Temperament: gentle, playful, dog-like loyalty, sociable.

Maine Coons have the highest rate of HCM of any cat breed. A genetic mutation (MYBPC3) causes progressive heart muscle thickening. Annual echocardiograms are recommended after age 2.

HCM management in Maine Coons costs $1,000-$4,000 annually in cardiac medication and monitoring.
