How this calculator works
This feeding calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula recommended by veterinary nutritionists worldwide. It calculates your pet's baseline calorie needs based on body weight, then adjusts for activity level and life stage.
The formula: RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is multiplied by activity and life stage factors to give the Daily Energy Requirement (DER). Portions are estimated based on average kibble caloric density of 350 kcal/cup for dogs and 300 kcal/cup for cats.
Feeding by life stage
Puppies (under 1 year): Need roughly twice the calories per kg of an adult. Feed 3-4 small meals daily to support growth without overloading the stomach.
Adult dogs (1-7 years): Two meals per day at consistent times. Adjust portions based on body condition, not just breed charts.
Senior dogs (7+ years): Metabolism slows. Reduce calories by 20% to prevent obesity, which accelerates joint disease.
Cats: Obligate carnivores with high protein needs. Wet food is critical for hydration, especially in warm climates.
Signs of correct feeding
You should be able to feel your pet's ribs without pressing hard, but not see them. A visible waist from above and slight abdominal tuck from the side indicate a healthy weight. Shiny coat, consistent energy, firm stools, and stable weight are all signs of correct nutrition.
Why diet tracking matters
In an analysis of 150,000+ pet health conversations on Omelo, diet and nutrition was the #1 topic, more than vomiting, emergencies, or any other concern. What you feed your pet every day is the single biggest health decision you make. Omelo helps you log meals, track outcomes, and build a nutrition history your vet can use. The calculator tells you where to start. Omelo tells you if it's working.
