Deworming Your Dog and Cat in India: Schedule, Signs, and What Actually Works

Worms are not a failure of hygiene โ€” they are almost inevitable in India

In India's warm, humid climate, intestinal parasites thrive year-round. Puppies often get worms from their mother before birth or through nursing. Adult dogs pick them up from contaminated soil, water, or prey. Indoor cats can get them from eating insects or from their owner's shoes tracking in eggs. Deworming is not optional โ€” it is basic preventive care.

**Types of worms in Indian pets**

Roundworms (Toxocara)

The most common worm in puppies and kittens. Look like white spaghetti. Puppies can get them in utero. Signs: pot-bellied appearance, poor coat, vomiting (sometimes you see worms in vomit), diarrhea. Zoonotic โ€” can infect humans, especially children.

Hookworms (Ancylostoma)

Tiny worms that attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood. Can cause severe anaemia in puppies. Signs: dark or bloody stool, pale gums, weakness, weight loss. Larvae can penetrate human skin (cutaneous larva migrans).

Tapeworms (Dipylidium)

Spread by fleas โ€” the dog or cat swallows an infected flea while grooming. Signs: rice-grain-like segments around the anus or in stool, scooting, mild irritation. Less harmful than other worms but indicate a flea problem too.

Whipworms (Trichuris)

Live in the large intestine. Signs: bloody diarrhea, weight loss, anaemia. More common in dogs than cats. Eggs survive in soil for years.

**Deworming schedule**

Puppies and kittens:

- Every 2 weeks from age 2 weeks until 12 weeks - Monthly from 3 months to 6 months - Every 3 months after 6 months (for life)

Adult dogs and cats:

- Every 3 months (quarterly) โ€” this is the standard recommendation - Monthly in high-risk environments (strays, outdoor dogs, dogs in contact with other animals) - Always deworm a new pet or rescue before bringing them home

Pregnant and nursing mothers:

- Deworm before mating - Deworm at day 40-45 of pregnancy (with vet guidance on safe products) - Deworm after delivery when puppies/kittens start their schedule

Signs your pet has worms

- Visible worms in stool or vomit - Rice-like segments around the anus (tapeworm) - Pot-bellied appearance in puppies/kittens - Dull, dry coat - Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite - Diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus) - Scooting (dragging bottom on the floor) - Anaemia (pale gums, weakness) - Coughing (roundworm larvae migrate through the lungs)

Deworming medicines available in India

- Praziquantel + Pyrantel (Drontal, Cazitel): Broad-spectrum, covers roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. The gold standard. - Fenbendazole (Panacur): Effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and Giardia. Given for 3-5 consecutive days. - Ivermectin: Used for heartworm prevention and some intestinal parasites. Not safe for Collies and related breeds. - Albendazole: Available and affordable in India but has a narrower margin of safety. Use only under vet guidance.

How to give a deworming tablet

- Hide it in a piece of cheese, paneer, or peanut butter - Place it at the back of the tongue and hold the mouth closed until they swallow - Crush and mix into wet food (check if the specific medicine allows this) - Liquid dewormers are easier for kittens and small puppies

After deworming

- You may see dead worms in stool for 1-3 days โ€” this is normal and means the medicine is working - Mild diarrhea or decreased appetite for a day is normal - If vomiting is severe or lasts more than a day, call your vet

Prevention beyond deworming

- Pick up stool promptly from the yard - Do not let your pet drink from puddles or stagnant water - Control fleas (fleas carry tapeworm) - Wash hands after handling pets, before eating - Keep children's play areas clean โ€” roundworm eggs survive in soil for years - Regular stool tests (faecal examination) at vet visits

Set deworming reminders

Every 3 months is easy to forget. Omelo lets you set recurring reminders so you never miss a dose. Log each deworming with the product used and any side effects โ€” this helps your vet track your pet's parasite control history.
